Description

Blazon

On a blue disc with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in diameter overall, a buff colored disc 2 1/8 inches (5.40 cm) in diameter, scalloped of eight and bearing a chevron interlaced with another reversed, both crimson.

Symbolism

Buff is one of the colors for Support units and crimson is for Ordnance; blue refers to the atmosphere and to the Air Defense role of the unit.  The chevron is a heraldic symbol for support derived from the construction of a gable rood.  (It provides support for the roof, which protects everything underneath).  One chevron pointing upward relates to the maintenance of Air Defense systems; the downward chevron refers to direct automotive maintenance support.  The outer circle is symbolic of readiness and continuity of service.

Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 16 July 1985.  (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-710)
